Paid search
The fastest way to appear, and the easiest to waste
Google Ads is the one channel that can put you at the top of the results page this afternoon. That speed is genuinely valuable for a new business, a seasonal push, or while slower search work builds underneath.
It is also the channel where money disappears fastest when it is set up carelessly. An account left on default settings will happily spend a local business's entire monthly budget on clicks from other states, on searches for free advice, and at two in the morning when nobody is there to answer the phone.
The difference between those two outcomes is almost entirely setup and maintenance. None of it is secret - most of it is just work that somebody has to actually do.
- Location targeting tight enough to mean Nagercoil, not all of India
- Negative keyword lists that stop you paying for the wrong searches
- Call tracking, so you know which advert produced the phone ringing
- Ad schedules matched to when you can actually answer
- Landing pages that load fast and say what the advert promised
- The account in your name - you keep the history if we part ways
Why it works
How we manage an account
Tight local targeting
A radius around your actual catchment, not a nationwide default. This one setting is the commonest cause of wasted spend we find.
Negatives from week one
Lists that block "free", "salary", "jobs", "course" and the hundred other searches that cost money and never buy.
Cost per enquiry, reported
Not impressions. The number that tells you whether to spend more, spend differently, or stop.
How the money actually works
Worth understanding before you spend anything, because it explains most of what a good manager is doing.
Google runs an auction every time somebody searches. You are not simply buying the top position - your position and what you pay depend on your bid and on how relevant Google judges your advert and landing page to be. That second half is the part you control without paying more, and it is why a well-built campaign can appear above a competitor bidding higher.
You pay when somebody clicks, not when your advert is shown. So the whole discipline is about making sure the people who click are the people who might buy, and that the page they land on does not waste them.
What clicks cost around here
Less than the figures you will read in international guides, which are usually American. Local service terms in a district like this are generally inexpensive compared with metropolitan India, simply because fewer businesses are bidding. Highly commercial categories - legal, medical, education, property - cost more everywhere, including here.
The number that matters is not cost per click but cost per enquiry. Twenty rupees a click is expensive if nobody converts and cheap if one in eight rings you. That is why the tracking setup matters more than the bidding.
When Google Ads is the right answer
- You need enquiries now. SEO takes months; this takes hours.
- People search for what you sell. If they do not - if your product has to be shown rather than looked up - Meta advertising is the better instrument. That comparison is on the digital marketing page.
- You are seasonal. Admission season, wedding months, the tourist season. Paid search lets you switch spend on and off with the demand.
- You are testing. A month of ads will tell you what people actually search for and what they respond to, which is useful intelligence for your organic search work afterwards.
Campaign types, and which suit a local business
Google will offer you several formats and its own recommendations lean towards the ones that spend the most. For a local business, most of the value is in the first two.
| Type | What it does | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Search | Text adverts against what people type | Almost every local business. The default, and usually the best return |
| Call-only | The advert is a phone number; tapping it rings you | Clinics, plumbers, service centres, anything urgent. Skips the website entirely |
| Performance Max | Google spreads spend across all its properties automatically | Larger budgets with good tracking. Risky on a small budget - it hides where money went |
| Display | Banner adverts on other websites | Awareness and remarketing. Poor as a first campaign; cheap clicks that rarely convert |
| Remarketing | Follows people who already visited your site | Considered purchases - property, vehicles, education, high-value retail |
| YouTube | Video adverts before and during videos | Brand building where you already have good video. Not an enquiry channel for most |
Where local budgets actually get wasted
When we audit an existing account, the same handful of problems appear almost every time. None of them is subtle, and together they routinely account for half the spend.
Location targeting left wide open
The default includes people merely interested in your targeted location, and accounts are frequently set to the whole country without anyone noticing. A Nagercoil business paying for clicks from Delhi is the single most expensive mistake available, and it is a two-minute fix.
No negative keywords
Without a negative list you pay for every loosely related search: people looking for jobs with you, students looking for a course, anybody with "free" in their query, and competitors checking your advert. Building the negative list is continuous work - you read the actual search terms each week and block what does not belong. Accounts nobody maintains bleed here permanently.
Broad match left on by default
Broad match shows your advert against anything Google judges related, which is a wide net and gets wider. Sometimes useful with strong negatives and good tracking; on an unmonitored small-budget account it is a leak.
No conversion tracking
Astonishingly common. Without it nobody - not you, not Google's automated bidding - knows which clicks produced enquiries, so the system optimises towards clicks rather than customers. If your current provider cannot show you cost per enquiry, they are flying blind and so are you.
Ads running when nobody answers
If your advert invites a call and you close at six, running it at eleven at night buys missed calls. Ad schedules should match your actual hours, with the possible exception of campaigns pointing at a website that can take an enquiry overnight.
Everything pointed at the home page
Somebody searches for one specific service, clicks, and lands on a general home page where they have to hunt. A meaningful share leave immediately. Each advert group should land on a page about that thing.
What we set up, and what stays yours
A first month looks roughly like this, and then it settles into weekly maintenance rather than a set-and-forget arrangement.
- The account in your name. We manage it under your ownership rather than holding it in ours. If we ever stop working together you keep the account, the history and the learning - which is not the arrangement everywhere, and it is worth asking any provider about before you sign.
- Conversion tracking before anything spends. Calls, WhatsApp clicks and form submissions, so every rupee is attributable from day one.
- Keyword research against real local search terms, including Tamil and transliterated queries where they matter.
- Campaign structure by service, so each advert group has its own adverts and its own landing page.
- Adverts written to disqualify as well as attract. Naming your area and being clear about what you do stops clicks from people you cannot serve - a slightly lower click rate and a considerably better cost per enquiry.
- Extensions set up properly: call buttons, location, and links to your specific service pages, which take up more of the results page at no extra cost.
- Weekly search-term review, adding negatives and adjusting bids. This is the ongoing work and it is what the management fee is for.
A note on Google's own recommendations
Google will email you suggestions and offer to apply them automatically. Some are sensible; many increase spend. The "optimisation score" is not a measure of your account's health so much as of how closely you follow Google's preferences. We read them, apply what helps, and ignore the rest - and we will never auto-apply recommendations to an account we manage.
How it runs
Getting a campaign live
Tracking first, then structure, then spend. In that order, always.
Research and audit
What people actually search for here, what it costs, who is bidding, and - if you have an existing account - where the current spend is leaking.
Tracking before spending
Calls, WhatsApp and forms measured before the first rupee goes out. Without this, nobody can tell whether it worked.
Check the landing page
Fast, matching the advert, with an obvious way to get in touch. We will say if it needs fixing first rather than let you pay for clicks it wastes.
Launch small and controlled
Tight targeting, exact terms, a modest daily cap. We would rather learn on a small budget than scale something unproven.
Weekly maintenance
Search-term review, negatives, bid adjustments, advert testing. This is the part that separates an account that improves from one that drifts.
Already running ads that are not working?
Send us access and we will look through the account and tell you what we find - where the spend is going, whether tracking is set up, and whether the targeting is doing what you think. That costs nothing and you are free to take the findings and fix it yourself, or hand them to whoever runs it now.
Fairly often the conclusion is that the account is fine and the problem is the page the traffic lands on, in which case the money is better spent on the site than on more clicks.

Common questions
Straight answers about Google Ads
What is the minimum budget for Google Ads in Nagercoil?
Lower than most people assume, because local competition here is thin compared with metropolitan India. What matters more than the total is concentration: a small budget on one tightly targeted campaign can work, while the same amount spread across several campaigns will not gather enough data to improve. We will tell you honestly if your budget is too small to be worth managing.
How is this different from SEO?
Ads are rented, SEO is owned. You appear today and stop appearing the moment you stop paying; SEO takes months but keeps working without paying per visit. They complement each other well - ads carry you while SEO matures, and the search terms the ads reveal tell you exactly what to write organic pages about.
Will I own the Google Ads account?
Yes. We set it up in your name and manage it under your ownership. If we part ways you keep the account, the conversion history and the learning the campaigns have accumulated, which has real value. Some agencies run clients inside their own account, which means you leave with nothing - it is worth asking anyone you are considering.
How quickly will I get enquiries?
Adverts can go live the same day and enquiries often arrive in the first week. The first two to four weeks are a learning period, though, so judge performance on the second month. Anybody promising a fixed number of enquiries in week one is guessing.
Can I run ads without a website?
Yes, with call-only campaigns, where the advert is a phone number and tapping it rings you directly. That works well for urgent services - plumbers, clinics, service centres. For anything where people want to see before calling, you need at least a fast landing page, or the money is wasted.
What happens if I stop the ads?
You stop appearing, immediately. That is the honest trade-off with paid search and the reason we usually recommend running SEO alongside, so that over time you are not entirely dependent on spend. Nothing is lost permanently - the account and its history stay yours and can be restarted.
Do you charge a percentage of ad spend?
Our management fee is stated in the agreement and is separate from your ad spend, which goes directly to Google from your own account. We will set out exactly how the fee is calculated before you commit. What we will not do is hold your advertising budget, because that makes it impossible for you to verify what was actually spent.
Can you run ads in Tamil?
Yes, and for some categories it performs noticeably better. We research both Tamil and English search terms, including transliterated Tamil typed in English letters, which is common here and frequently less competitive. Which one wins is a question we test rather than assume.
Paid search is not complicated, but it is unforgiving of neglect. An account set up carefully and reviewed weekly will outperform a larger budget running on defaults, often by a wide margin, and almost all of that advantage comes from unglamorous maintenance rather than any clever tactic.
